While hiring new colleagues is one of our most important tasks, we must best use the limited time that we have to make these decisions. The campus interview is an intractable tradition, despite the extensive literature on the inadequacy and even the misleading nature of this ritual. We have all made the mistake of hiring a practiced interviewee who turns out, once hired, to be far less skilled at doing the job. We do that when we require prospective faculty hires to perform a teaching demonstration. Similarly, we should ask candidates for public relations positions, for example, to design and write a mini campaign. What a concept! But the candidate interview will not disappear any time soon. After years of experience in interviewing and being interviewed for campus positions, I have distilled the interview questions into the equivalent of speed dating, starting with three: Why You? Why Us? Why Now?

Jobcentre bosses in Aberdeen have found unlikely inspiration for getting people into work — speed dating. Chiefs at Aberdeen Jobcentre Plus have come up with a new initiative modelled on dating schemes where single men and women spend two minutes chatting before switching to another conversation. The speed employment event started in March with more than 20 people attending in search of work and just as many representatives of organisations there to meet them.
Since then it has gone from strength to strength, with a healthy turnout for the monthly sessions and glowing feedback from both employers and job hunters — and it is working. According to employers, more than 15 people have applied for jobs on the day of speed employment workshops and 10 more have applied to enrol on training courses to boost their CV. The workshop is for those aged 18 to 21 and people are often told about them by their work coach.
Jobseekers can spend between five and 15 minutes with each provider before taking away a business card from the person they spoke to and moving on to the next chat. Then we see how we can best help. We can either suggest something that can improve their employment prospects or signpost them to someone else who can. Speed Meeting – think of it as speed dating but without the awkwardness. Through this meeting, job seekers from the general public are provided the opportunity to have interview practice with actual hiring employers in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment. Job seekers interview with five hiring employers from various fields throughout Halifax and surrounding areas.
The employers fill out a feedback sheet giving positive feedback and words of advice to the Job Seeker. Our Job Developer meets with each Job Seeker one on one, to review the feedback offered by employers – after the event. Because when you combine hiring employers with eligible and qualified candidates in a supportive and inclusive environment, a “right person, right job” is bound to happen – it’s osmosis in its simplest form.

They are greeted by our employment team and through an interactive discussion, are given a plethora of resources about the ease of accommodation in the workplace, the business case for inclusion and diversity, and tips and resources about the accessibility legislation and financial support available.
